Luxury Car Depreciation in Ireland
Which Cars Hold Their Value
Depreciation is the difference between what you pay and what you later receive, but the second number is unknowable at purchase. Treat it as a scenario, not a promise. A useful Irish comparison records current asking prices for genuinely similar cars and keeps depreciation separate from tax, finance, insurance, servicing and repairs.
Why luxury cars depreciate the way they do
Premium cars typically lose value fastest in their first one to three years, then the curve flattens. The depth of that early drop depends on a handful of factors:
Use the actual drive-away price after discounts and fees, not a historic list price.
Match model year, powertrain, trim, mileage and import status before comparing.
Record service evidence, damage, repairs, tyres, keys and warranty rather than using vague labels.
Advertisements show seller expectations. They do not disclose the final agreed price.
Model more than one sale date and mileage outcome instead of relying on a single forecast.
Keep depreciation alongside finance, insurance, tax, fuel, servicing and repairs.
The pattern, not a price list
Create a small comparison table from current Irish listings. Save the date, price, mileage, trim, seller type and URL. Repeat later to see asking-price movement, noting that a missing advert may have sold, expired or been withdrawn. For an import, calculate registration costs separately using Revenue's current VRT material; do not copy a previous buyer's VRT figure onto a different car.
How to buy to minimise depreciation
You cannot eliminate depreciation. You can reduce avoidable uncertainty by paying a price supported by current comparables, verifying condition and history, choosing a car you can keep for the planned period and avoiding finance or maintenance pressure that could force an early sale. Our timing guide covers the purchase decision.
A comparable price is useful only when the car's identity, mileage, finance, history and condition have been checked.
